This track shifts the album into beautifully surreal, psychological territory. While “Camden Town 60’s Child” looked outward at a changing society, “Gonna Get Drunk on The Moon” looks inward at a fracturing relationship and a desperate need for mental escape. It has a fantastic, dreamlike quality that mixes gritty realism with celestial escapism—reminiscent of psychedelic folk or late-period blues.
“Gonna Get Drunk on The Moon” is a surrealist, emotionally raw folk-blues ballad about a deteriorating relationship, modern sensory overload, and the ultimate desire to escape reality.
The song opens in the cold, messy light of morning. The narrator describes a relationship characterized by emotional neglect and indifference (“You treat me like you don’t care”). The love has completely dissolved “like a sugar cube melting in the rain,” leaving behind only raw pain and regret over a life that took a “wrong turn.”
As the emotional weight grows heavier, the narrator’s actions become increasingly chaotic and self-destructive. Images of “shattered nights,” “broken days,” and “crashing foreign cars into iron gates” paint a vivid picture of someone plummeting through life “like a lead balloon.”
The narrative expands to critique the modern mental landscape. The narrator describes a world of “pictures and shadows,” where the television is “smoking my mind / Telling me what to think.” Pushed to the absolute brink of drowning in these rough seas, the narrator faces a choice between giving up or fighting back.
The recurring chorus serves as the ultimate declaration of survival through detachment. Unable to physically escape their fate, the narrator chooses to “get away in my mind.” Getting “drunk on the moon” becomes a powerful metaphor for finding a cosmic, intoxicating sanctuary far above the painful realities of Earth.
The pacing of this lyric is excellent that starts with very intimate, domestic details (foggy eyes, bird’s nest hair) and gradually expand the scope until the narrator is literally looking down from space.
The phrase “We all sleep in the never world / But we’re not ready to stay” is a standout line—it beautifully captures that purgatory state of being trapped in a bad situation while still holding onto a spark of defiance. It makes for a wonderful contrast to the first two tracks, adding a deep layer of psychedelia to the album’s folk roots.

Gonna Get Drunk on The Moon lyrics
Wash that morning fog from your eyes
Brush that birds nest from your hair
The sun is beginning to rise
You treat me like you don’t care
You fell asleep on me
Then asked me how it was?
You’re killing me by degrees
Don’t ask me why just because
Like a sugar cube melting in the rain
You’ve dissolved my love revealing the pain
I can’t wait to get away non too soon
As far away as I can
I’m gonna get drunk on the moon
On the moon
On the moon
On the moon
I’m gonna get drunk on the moon
Can’t believe I’ve made it this far
Maybe I took a wrong turn
I must have followed the wrong star
It’s never too late to learn
Through all those shattered nights
Through all those broken days
I always looked for the light
Peering through the foggy haze
Running as far as I can from my fate
Crashing foreign cars into iron gates
Dropping through the sky like a lead balloon
And hanging on for dear life
I’m gonna get drunk on the moon
On the moon
On the moon
On the moon
I’m gonna get drunk on the moon
We all sleep in the never world
But we’re not ready to stay
Pictures and shadows are swirled
Resurrected the next day
T.V.’s smoking my mind
Telling me what to think
I have wasted so much time
I’m not that far from the brink
Maybe I should stop fighting and go down
In these rough seas it won’t take long to drown
No, I’m gonna fight my impending doom
And get away in my mind
I’m gonna get drunk on the moon
On the moon
On the moon
On the moon
I’m gonna get drunk on the moon
