It is a brilliant, highly entertaining rockabilly track! It features a hilarious, tongue-in-cheek lyrical twist that subverts the classic, sweet “dreaming of my sweetheart” trope. It perfectly captures that sassy, confident, and slightly petty rock ‘n’ roll attitude found in tracks like The Everly Brothers’ “Bird Dog” (which is smoothly name-dropped!).
“I Had A Dream About You” is a comedic, mid-tempo rockabilly song that begins as a romantic fantasy but quickly devolves into a cheeky breakup anthem. It explores the hilarious realization that the “dream girl” who actually satisfies the narrator’s desires looks and acts nothing like his current, uptight partner—leading him to realize he’s ready to move on. It is witty, swaggering, and full of attitude. It’s a clever mid-century comedy-romance track that uses a dream to expose a very real relationship mismatch, wrapped up in pure rock ‘n’ roll confidence.
The song opens with the narrator ecstatically telling his partner about an amazing, passionate dream he had about her. In the dream, she was carefree, completely “on fire” with desire at the passion pit (a classic 1950s slang term for a drive-in theater), and doing all the adventurous things she always refused to do in real life.
Mid-song, the narrator drops a bombshell realization. As he describes the dream, he admits the girl actually looked entirely different: “your hair had changed from blonde to brown / And you told me you were from outta town.” He hilariously admits that his subconscious didn’t dream of his girlfriend at all; it dreamed of a completely different, much more fun woman.
When called out, the narrator refuses to apologize, boldly stating that she can’t control his imagination (“Can’t put a wet rag on my imagination”). If she can’t or won’t please him, he is perfectly content letting her go.
Rather than begging her to change, the narrator proudly stands his ground. He happily encourages other guys (“Bird Dogs”) to take her away, confidently declaring that there are plenty of other fish in the sea. The song delivers a hilarious final punchline in the outro, shifting from “I had a dream about you” to a blunt, casual shrug: “I guess it wasn’t you.”

I Had A Dream About You lyrics
Baby oh baby, I had a dream about you
It sure was fun
In my dream about you
I told you that you were the one
I had a dream about you baby
Or maybe it wasn’t about you, maybe
You were making me happy through and through
Doing all those things you said that you never would do
I had a dream about you
I wish it was true
You were doing all those things
You told me that you would never ever do
I had a dream about you
Having a ball at the passion pit
We were real gone, our fuses were lit
It’s like you were on fire
Full of passion, full of desire
But you looked different in my dream
You weren’t uptight as you always seemed
And your hair had changed from blonde to brown
And you told me you were from outta town
I had a dream about you
I wish it was true
You were doing all those things
You told me that you would never ever do
I had a dream about you
You can’t control my dreams that can’t be wrong
Can’t put a wet rag on my imagination
If you can’t please your man completely
Then there’s plenty of other fish in the sea
I’ll let those Bird Dogs take you away
I won’t crawl on my knees and beg you to stay
You’re a Dolly, and you know that it’s true
I’ll let someone else be happy with you
I had a dream about you
I wish it was true
You were doing all those things
You told me that you would never ever do
I had a dream about you
I had a dream about you
I guess it wasn’t you
