This track tells the cautionary tale of a billionaire aviation pioneer whose life spiraled after a plane crash led to severe painkiller addiction. Wracked by germaphobia, extreme isolation, and decay, he died unrecognizable—proving immense wealth cannot buy peace or health.

Sincerely Mr. Hughes lyrics
I never want to be the richest man alive
I’ll never forget when the richest man alive died

Here is a story that I was told
About Howard Hughes who died at 70 years old
He started with his father’s money he’d inherited
But Howard was an innovator and new types of planes he invented

He crashed one in 46 while test flying it in Beverley Hills
He was horrifically injured and was lucky not to have been killed
They gave him morphine and codeine to ease the pain
He became addicted and his life would never be the same

He lived alone in darkness and shut out the light
He never knew if it was daytime or if it was night
He’d self-inject more and more to satisfy his need
Thirty years of addiction eventually destroyed his kidneys

To be the richest man on earth
What did it bring you, what was it worth
I’d never wanna find myself in your shoes
I’d never wanna find myself in your shoes
Sincerely Mister Howard Hughes

All of his money couldn’t help his distress
He decided that living in seclusion for him was best
His OCD about germs fuelled his fear
He lived without a human touch for thirty years

No-one was allowed to come within four feet of him
In case they breathed their germs onto him
He stopped washing and didn’t seem to care
He had long dirty nails, unkempt beard and long dirty hair

One time he had fallen and broke his hip
They found embedded in his arm, five broken needle tips
When he died people were shocked and were stunned
For he looked like a dirty homeless bum

To be the richest man on earth
What did it bring you, what was it worth
I’d never wanna find myself in your shoes
I’d never wanna find myself in your shoes
Sincerely Mister Howard Hughes

He was just skin and bones and weighed only ninety pounds
As they carried his body from his plane down to the ground
The only one allowed to touch him after his race was run
Was the pathologist determining how he died, he was the only one

At his simple eight minute funeral service were just twenty family members
He never left a Will, not that anyone knew or could remember
So all hell broke lose over his two point five billion dollars
With people coming out of the woodwork hoping to fill their coffers

In the end his money went to twenty members of his family
And forever and ever after they all lived happily
And the moral of this story, the moral of this song
Is yes, that the love of money is wrong
The love of money is wrong
And it won’t help cure your ills in the long run
It won’t help cure your ills in the long run

To be the richest man on earth
What did it bring you, what was it worth
I’d never wanna find myself in your shoes
I’d never wanna find myself in your shoes
