“Stormy Weather” is a visceral exploration of the disintegration of a toxic relationship. It follows a narrator caught in a loop of confusion and “deja vu,” struggling to reconcile the effort they’ve invested with the cold reality of a partner who is emotionally unavailable or intentionally hurtful.
The opening lines establish a sense of being lost in time and space (“Is it the beginning or is it the end”). The narrator is physically present but mentally wandering, highlighting a profound sense of “loneliness that cuts to the bone.”
The song utilizes powerful, macabre imagery—comparing a failing relationship to “lying next to a corpse.” This suggests that while the physical presence remains, the soul and passion of the connection have long since died.
There is a recurring sense of being silenced or dismissed. Whether it’s the partner getting “uptight” during conversation or the narrator’s “breath sticking in their throat,” the lyrics depict a relationship where words have become useless or weaponized.
The “howling wind” and “stormy weather” serve as a pathetic fallacy for the internal chaos. The narrator eventually accepts that the relationship cannot be held together, ending with a poignant, unanswered question about why their loyalty wasn’t reciprocated.

Stormy Weather lyrics
Is it the beginning
Or is it the end
I sometimes get confused, I can’t pretend
Was I in this same place sometime before
Can you tell me what is the number on the door
Well it’s way past midnight and I’m walking the floor
Tryna understand what it was I came here for
Sometimes wishing, wishing I hadn’t been born
Hoping this feeling goes, goes before dawn
Feeling the time has come, come to seperate
But it’s hard to let go, watching it all disintegrate
I’m with you, I’m with you but I’m alone
This loneliness cuts right through to the bone
And the wind, the wind is howling outside through the trees
Like the spirits of destiny are calling to me
With all this darkness and stormy weather
There’s no way we could hold it all together
I could feel that something wasn’t at all right
Whenever I spoke, I spoke and you got uptight
And told me what I said was never right
Whenever we made love it always ended up in a fight
I’m holding on, on to a feeling that was dead
Just like lying next to a corpse in my bed
I try to put into words all that I feel
But I know you won’t think it’s such a big deal
My breath it sticks, sticks dry in my throat
Without air for how long can I stay afloat
I’ll leave you something, I’ll leave you a note
Maybe you’ll pay attention to the words I wrote
But then again, almost certainly you most probably won’t
Oh why, why couldn’t you
Couldn’t you stay true
I gave all I had to you?
Oh why, why couldn’t you
Couldn’t you stay true?
Just like I tried to be to you?
Just like I tried to be to you?
