The song is an absolute classic rockabilly setup! It brings back that fun, energetic, and slightly mischievous romantic tension that drove so many great hits in the 1950s. It features a brilliant “opposites attract” trope that gives the narrative a fantastic storyline.
“Will You Or Won’t You” is a high-energy, playful rockabilly romance that captures the anxious, heart-pounding anticipation of proposing to a sweetheart. The song follows a self-proclaimed “bad boy” who is completely smitten by a traditional, good girl, desperately pleading for her to take a leap of faith and say “I do.” It is playful, catchy, and romantic. It perfectly balances a “rebel with a heart of gold” persona with a wholesome, uplifting love story.
The song centers around the agonizing suspense of waiting for an answer after confessing love. The narrator is losing sleep (“I can’t sleep at night, my heart is in your hands”) and begging for a clue because the vulnerability of waiting has left him feeling “blue.”
In a brilliant lyrical twist, the song establishes a classic forbidden-romance dynamic. The narrator proudly admits he likes to have fun, doesn’t care about gossip, and is “no choirboy.” The stakes are comically raised when he reveals he is pursuing the ultimate good girl—the vicar’s daughter—adding a layer of playful defiance to their dates at the movies.
While he admits he isn’t a “muscle man,” he sweetly promises that he is “strong enough for two.” Beneath the rock ‘n’ roll swagger lies a genuinely devoted partner who wants to protect her and build a future together.
The song beautifully contrasts the loud, rebellious rockabilly lifestyle with a peaceful, pastoral dream of marriage. The narrator envisions a quiet life of holding hands, watching the river flow, watching the sunset, and listening to the birds sing.
Unlike many heartbreak tracks, this song delivers a satisfying, feel-good ending. In the final chorus, the tense question “Will you or won’t you?” shifts to a triumphant celebration: “You said you would / You said ‘I do’ / Now it is so good!”

Will You Or Won’t You lyrics
Will you or won’t you
Maybe you should
Just say ‘I do’
It’ll be so good
Since I told you ‘I love you’
I been feeling so blue
I been kinda wond’ring
If you feel the same way too?
Come on just tell me you do
Don’t want to pressure you
But I keep on thinking
You’re the best I’ve ever knew
Will you or won’t you
Maybe you should
Just say ‘I do’
It’ll be so good
Yeah I like to play
I like some joy
Don’t care what they say
I ain’t no choirboy
I’ll take you to a movie
I’ll hug you and you’ll hug me
Know I shouldn’t oughta
Cause you’re the vicar’s daughter
Will you or won’t you
Maybe you should
Just say ‘I do’
It’ll be so good
Oh give me a clue
I need to know
My life ahead
Is it with you?
Please just tell me
Tell me what you feel
I know what’s inside
Is it for real?
You make me feel good
I just wanna hold you
I’m not a muscle man
But I’m strong enough for two
I just wanna be your man
Let me know if I can
Oh I can’t sleep at night
My heart is in your hands
Will you or won’t you
Maybe you should
Just say ‘I do’
It’ll be so good
We can watch the river flow
And the sun go down low
Hear the birds sing
And the soft winds blow
Walk hand in hand
Just me and you
Together as one
When you say ‘I do’
Will you or won’t you
You said you would
You said ‘I do’
Now it is so good
It’s is so good
